Tournaments

Broomball

EAA supports several tournaments throughout the school year, and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun!  In fact, fun is so important that I am making it mandatory that every student in engineering have some fun this year.  A good way to get your quota of fun would be to attend a one-day tournament, so make sure to sign up for the tournaments mailing list to receive details about upcoming events.

Tournaments usually take place in a single day or evening, and some of them (like broomball) welcome teams across different faculties here at U of T.  If you're a new student, tournaments are great places to meet new people from engineering and beyond.

Here the tournaments organized by the Tournaments Director including, but not limited to:

  • Broomball - a game of intense skill and concentration (just kidding), broomball is probably the most interesting tournament run at U of T.  The object of the game is to run around on an ice hockey rink and try to push a big ball into the opposing team's net with a broom.  What actually happens is ten people trying to remain standing while being knocked down by the ball, other players or themselves.  Eventually some lucky player keeps their balance long enough to score.
  • Softball - similar to baseball, softball employs the use of a larger ball and a different style of pitching.
  • Cricket - I'm going to be honest here, I have no idea how to play (or watch) cricket, so needless to say I'm a bit shaky on the rules.  I'm sure they're on wikipedia though.  If anyone would like to enlighten me, feel free.  Or feel expensive, however you like it.
  • European Handball - it's not what it sounds like, and you don't have to be European to play.  Basically, you've got a ball (just one) and you pass it around your team and throw it in the opposing net.
  • Floorball - this is like hockey with a few minor changes.  Namely, it is non-contact, played in a gym, the puck is a wiffle ball and the referees make fair calls.
  • Basketball - ball, hoops, Michael Jordan, you get the idea.
  • Dodgeball - Dodge, dip, duck, dive... and dodge.  You may practise for this sport by dodging wrenches at home.
  • Volleyball - like Viagara, this sport is all about keeping it up.  Bump, set and spike your way to a good time.
  • Soccer - let out your inner Beckham or Pele and kick the ball around.  Also, make sure to practice holding your knee and rolling around on the ground.

As you can see, there are a lot of different things to try, so make sure to come out to anything that tickles your fancy.

If you're still wondering if tournaments might be right for you, complete the following survey:

1.  Are you currently, or have you been in the last 5 years, alive?

2.  To the best of your knowledge, have you ever played a sport, saw one on television, known someone who played a sport, eaten pizza,   given a high-five, or participated in gym class?

3.  Do you hate surveys?

If you answered 'yes' once, then it is clear that you skipped to the end and hate surveys, in which case, my feelings are definitely hurt.
If you answered 'yes' twice or more then tournaments would likely be a beneficial supplement to your average daily life.

If you have any questions, or want to help organizing an event, don't hesitate to send an email to the Tournaments Director, do it right away!
